Male of Female?

When most people get a new pup or dog they see something cute and go with it. The dog needs to fit your personality and lifestyle. Some people like males and other like females. What is best for you?
First off if you have kids something you should look at is the temperament of the dog. My vet told me that 8 out 10 dog bites are from intact male dogs. That's a big difference from male to female. Because I have a child for example and prefer females. Males are usually more dominant and territorial over bones, toys, etc. If you have a young child that is crawling or just walking you don't want them to approach a dominant dog that is enjoying a mid afternoon treat. That could be very dangerous.
Females on the other hand or usually more tolerant and less dominant. All though there will always exceptions to this rule.
In my experience I have found females are usually more protective of their families. All of my males would lick a burglar to death before anything else. The trade off with the females is they don't normally have the look that the male will have. Males have the bigger heads and chest and are more muscular. There is not a lot of dogs that are more intimidating then a large male pit.
Both from what I have seen are equally loving. A good way to judge this is by the way their parents are. If at all possible always meet the parents of the dog as this will help determine the pups personality and temperament more then anything. Anyone looking for a dog should really not just look at the looks alone, but the sex, temperament, parents, level of dominance etc. I understand not all of these will be always be available. Try to find out anything you can and do your research. A little work a head of time will keep you happy and your dog out of a shelter.

How many Dogs and Cats are Euthanized Yearly?

As there is not an exact number the HSUS reports and estimated 3-4 million dogs and cats are put to sleep each year. There is some that even say its more like 6-8 million yearly! That is a lot of wasted souls that never had a chance.
Here is some numbers that will really make your head spin! If never spayed or neutered, a female dog, and their puppies could produce over 66,000 dogs in 6 years! That is not a typo. Please get your dogs spayed and neutered. Every dog helps in a big way as you can see.

Should I buy from a Pet Store?

So you are looking for a new little friend to add to your family? When you pass buy a store it can be nearly impossible to not go in and see all the cute little puppy faces. Pet Stores are long since known to get their puppies from Puppy mills or backyard breeders. This means the dogs are usually unhealthy and unsocialized. They can also be inbred and have temperament issues. Some stores will be 75$ to 100$ for a puppy and turn around and sell it for 1,200 or more! Many times these puppies are sick and given meds to mask the sickness until there sold.
Another problem is the fact of over population of dogs and cats in the U.S. There is so many animals in Rescues and shelters that are literally dieing for a good home. There is also many full breeds in these rescues and shelters. A lot of these places become so busy that they need to make room for more animals so if the ones they have are not adopted quick they are put to sleep. This includes puppies and kittens. It is disturbing that so many helpless animals don't even get a shot at life because their like has to end far to soon. So the answer to the question, should I buy from a pet store is NO! Don't be tempted, you are getting ripped off and may not get a good sound dog that is healthy.

Best Way To Bond with your Dog

Most people feel the more attention that they give their dog the more the dog loves them. This is not always the case. Some people wonder why they give their dog all kinds of attention but the dog will continue to go to the spouse that pays them no mind. This is common with dogs and doesn't mean the dog doesn't love you. If you are always giving the dog tons and tons of attention a more dominant type dog will view you as a lower member of the pack and you will not have a lot of respect from him. He wont have the desire to please you if you are a lower member. Now if your spouse ignores him, he feels the your spouse is higher in the pack and wants to "suck up" to him. Plus higher pack members make the dog feel more secure so they choose to stay close.
If you want more attention from your dog there is things you can do. For example do not pet, talk to, or make eye contact with your dog for 2 days. I know what your thinking already! It sounds mean. Actually it is not at all if you really understand dogs in a pack situation. No matter what though you have to stick to it. The dog must completely be ignored. This is how you will start to assert your self as pack leader. No matter how hard he tries you do not even tell him to go away because that is attention also. On about the 3ard day you can give him some attention but do not over due it. A little a time. Then what I would do that creates the best bond with your dog is walk him. Yep it is as simple as that. Just take him for a nice walk every day or every other day. Make sure he isn't in front of you though. If he is you will need to have him trained or look into how to do it your self. Walking with your dog is one of the best ways to bond with him. It makes them feel like a pack. It really is true too, the more time you walk with your dog the better your bond will be. Give it a shot and make sure to get in the habit of doing it and you will both be better off for it.

This has to be my dream puppy right here. This is a blue and white and appears to be an American Staffordshire Terrier. This just means that it is a Pit Bull that has been bred for show and the gameness has been watered down so much that it is considered a different breed. But this is still a pit bull. It gets confusing but I will go into more in the future.
